This is the page where random generation fails most visibly. Draw two denominators freely and you get sevenths plus elevenths: a common denominator of 77, an answer nobody can simplify, and a worksheet no teacher would set. Here the two denominators come from a family that shares factors — halves, quarters and eighths, or thirds, sixths and twelfths — so the common denominator stays small and the answer reduces. That single rule is the difference between a usable sheet and a generated one.
Grade 3 to Grade 6, ages eight to twelve. Same denominators are the Grade 3 exercise, where the point is that only the numerators are added. Related denominators belong in Grade 4 and 5, where one denominator divides the other and only one fraction has to be changed. Mixed numbers are Grade 5 and 6.
Start with the same denominator in both fractions — that version teaches the one idea pupils most often get wrong, which is that denominators are not added. Move to related denominators next: they need a common denominator, but only one fraction has to be rewritten, so the arithmetic stays inside the times tables. Unrelated denominators are the hardest setting and the one to use sparingly, because the multiplication starts to overshadow the fractions. Mixed numbers add a second step and belong on their own page rather than mixed into a first lesson.
The headline error is adding the denominators: a half plus a quarter comes out as two sixths. It survives a whole page of same-denominator questions unnoticed, which is why the related setting is worth using early. The second error is finding a common denominator correctly and then forgetting to scale the numerator with it. The third is stopping before the answer is in lowest terms, which the key catches because every answer there is fully reduced.
