What this worksheet is for

A half, 0.5 and 50% are the same amount written three ways, and fluency here is what makes percentages usable rather than a procedure. The conversions in one direction are mechanical — divide for a decimal, multiply by a hundred for a percentage — and the reverse direction needs simplifying, which is where the practice bites. Every fraction on this page has a terminating decimal, so nothing has to be rounded and no answer is approximate.

Who it suits

Grade 5 to Grade 8, ages ten to fourteen. Recognising the common equivalents — halves, quarters, fifths, tenths — is a Grade 5 and 6 target worth memorising; converting an arbitrary fraction belongs later.

How to use the settings

Use one direction at a time while the methods are new, then mixed as a check. The set of fractions is deliberately the common ones, because the goal at this level is recall rather than long division: a pupil who knows that a fifth is 0.2 and 20% will handle most real problems without writing anything down.

What goes wrong

Moving the decimal point the wrong way is the dominant error going from decimal to percentage, and it gives answers a hundred times too small or too large — worth teaching the sanity check that a percentage is usually a bigger-looking number than its decimal. The second is failing to simplify when converting a percentage to a fraction, leaving 25/100 rather than a quarter.

Questions

How do I turn a fraction into a decimal?
Divide the numerator by the denominator. For the common fractions it is quicker to recall them, which is what this page is for.
Why do all the fractions here have nice decimals?
Because their denominators divide a power of ten — halves, quarters, fifths, tenths, twentieths, twenty-fifths and fiftieths. Thirds and sevenths recur forever and would turn this into a rounding exercise.
Should the fraction answers be simplified?
Yes, and the key gives them in lowest terms. 25% written as 25/100 is correct but unfinished.
