What this worksheet is for

Percentages go wrong for a reason that has nothing to do with percentages: the arithmetic underneath is usually division, and a pupil who is shaky at division cannot show what they know about percent. So the numbers here are chosen to come out whole — twenty per cent of 45 is 9, not 8.7 — which keeps the page about the three questions that actually matter: what is this percentage of that number, what number was this percentage taken from, and what percentage is one number of another. The third is the one most classes never practise and most real problems ask.

Who it suits

Grade 5 to Grade 8, ages ten to fourteen. Finding a percentage of a number is Grade 5 and 6; the reverse question and “what percentage is" belong in Grade 7 and 8, usually alongside ratio.

How to use the settings

Start with percentage of a number and the round percentages — ten, twenty, twenty-five, fifty. Those can be found by dividing and doubling rather than by any formula, which is how most adults actually do them. Move to finding the whole once that is fluent, because it is the same relationship read backwards, and finish with “what percentage is", which needs division and is where the real difficulty lives. Mixed is a revision page, not a teaching one.

What goes wrong

The classic error in the reverse question is taking the percentage of the part instead of scaling up: given that 20% of a number is 30, a pupil answers 6. The second is dividing the wrong way round in “what percentage is", which produces a percentage over 100 for a part smaller than the whole — worth teaching as a sanity check the pupil can run themselves. The third is losing the per cent sign, which sounds trivial until the answer is used in a later step.

Questions

Do the answers always come out whole?
Yes. The numbers are chosen so that every percentage lands on a whole number, so nobody gets stuck doing long division in the middle of a percentages exercise.
How do I find 20% without a calculator?
Find 10% by dividing by ten, then double it. Most round percentages can be built the same way: 5% is half of 10%, 15% is 10% plus 5%, 25% is a quarter.
What is the difference between the three question types?
The first gives the percentage and the whole and asks for the part. The second gives the percentage and the part and asks for the whole. The third gives the part and the whole and asks for the percentage. They are the same relationship with a different unknown, which is worth saying out loud rather than teaching as three separate methods.
