What this worksheet is for

One generator covers the whole range of multiplication practice, from single-digit recall up to long multiplication, because the difference between them is only how many digits each factor has. Set both to one and the page is a times-table drill. Set the first to three and the second to two and it becomes the written method, which needs column form and room to work. The page refuses to repeat a product, and it will not fill itself with multiplying by zero and one — those are capped at a small share, because a page of them looks like practice without being practice.

Who it suits

Grade 2 to Grade 5, ages seven to eleven. Single digit by single digit belongs with the times tables in Grade 2 and 3. Two digits by one digit is the standard Grade 3 to 4 written exercise, and three by two is where Grade 5 pupils are working.

How to use the settings

Set the digit counts first — they decide everything else. For written multiplication choose column form, because the method depends on the partial products lining up underneath one another, and add large working space so there is somewhere for them to go. Fewer problems per page is not a loss here: sixteen long multiplications is a full lesson, where forty single-digit facts is five minutes. Use Versions if you want two different sheets that can be marked from one printout.

What goes wrong

In long multiplication almost every wrong answer comes from the same place: the second partial product is not shifted one column to the left, so the answer is short by a factor of ten. It is worth marking for that specifically rather than for the final number. The other frequent fault is a carried digit added before the multiplication in the next column instead of after it.

Questions

How do I get a single-digit times table page?
Set both digit counts to one. If you want to drill particular tables — sixes, sevens and eights — the times tables generator is the better page, because it lets you choose which tables appear.
What layout should I use for long multiplication?
Column form. The written method relies on partial products lining up under one another, which the in a row layout cannot show. Add medium or large working space so pupils have room to write them.
Why are there fewer problems on the page than I asked for?
When the digit range is small there are only so many distinct products — with both factors set to one digit there are under a hundred, and the page will not repeat one. Widen the digits or lower the count and the page fills again.
Is the answer key on the same sheet?
No, it prints on its own page behind the worksheet, in the same layout and the same order, so it can be laid over a finished sheet for marking. Turn it off if you want the questions alone.
