Simplifying fractions worksheets

Reduce each fraction to lowest terms. Every question is built by scaling a fraction up, so each one really does simplify, and the size of the common factor is under your control.

What this worksheet is for

A worksheet of fractions to simplify is only useful if the fractions actually simplify, which sounds obvious and is exactly what random generation gets wrong: draw a numerator and a denominator freely and most pairs are already in lowest terms. Every question here is built backwards — start with a reduced fraction, multiply top and bottom by the same number — so each one has a real common factor to find. The size of that factor varies, which is what stops pupils dividing by two out of habit.

Who it suits

Grade 4 to Grade 6, ages nine to twelve. It usually arrives with equivalent fractions and just before adding fractions with unlike denominators, where simplifying the answer becomes part of every question.

How to use the settings

Keep the denominator limit modest at first, because a pupil finding a common factor of six in a fraction with a two-digit denominator is doing two hard things at once. Use this page as a warm-up before a lesson on adding fractions rather than as a topic on its own — simplifying only feels worth doing when it is the last step of a longer question.

What goes wrong

Dividing by two once and stopping is the commonest fault: eight twelfths becomes four sixths and the pupil moves on. The second is dividing only the numerator, which changes the value rather than the form. Both are visible at a glance against a key where every answer has no common factor left.

Questions

Does every fraction on the page simplify?
Yes. Each one is built by scaling a fraction that was already in lowest terms, so there is always a common factor of at least two to find.
How do I know a fraction is fully simplified?
When the only whole number that divides both the numerator and the denominator is one. In practice, keep dividing by any common factor you can see until none is left.
What is the fastest way to do it?
Divide by the greatest common factor in one step rather than halving repeatedly. Repeated halving gets there in the end and is why so many answers on a marked page are half-finished.
