What this worksheet is for

Skip counting is how a class gets from counting to multiplying. A pupil who can rattle off the fives forwards is halfway to the five times table, and one who can also do it backwards from an awkward starting point genuinely understands the step rather than reciting a chant. This generator builds rows with as many gaps as you want, so the same page can be a gentle fill-in or nearly blank. Every row is drawn fresh, which matters here more than anywhere else: a sequence sheet that repeats is a memory test.

Who it suits

Grade 1 to Grade 4, ages six to ten. Twos, fives and tens starting from zero suit the first year. Threes, fours and sixes belong alongside the times tables in Grade 2 and 3. Counting back, and counting on from a number that is not a multiple, is the Grade 3 to 4 version and is markedly harder.

How to use the settings

Pick the step first, then decide how much support the row gives. Four gaps out of eight numbers leaves enough anchors that a pupil can see the pattern; seven out of eight is effectively asking them to write out the sequence. Turning off start on a multiple is the single change that makes this exercise hard — counting on in fives from 37 is a different skill from counting on from 35, and it is the one that transfers to mental addition.

What goes wrong

The commonest error is adding the step to the wrong neighbour after a gap, so the row drifts and every later answer is out by one step. It shows up as a row where the first few answers are right and the rest are consistently wrong, which is worth marking as one mistake rather than five. Counting backwards produces a second pattern: pupils count forwards anyway and fill the row in the wrong direction.

Questions

Can I count in steps that are not 2, 5 or 10?
Any step from 2 to 100. Twenty-fives and hundreds are worth using once money and place value are under way, because they rehearse both at once.
What does start on a multiple do?
With it on, a row counting in fives starts at 0, 5, 10 and so on. With it off the row might start at 37, so the pupil counts on in fives from a number that is not itself a multiple. That is harder and much closer to how the skill is used.
How many rows fit on a page?
Ten rows of eight numbers is comfortable on US Letter and leaves room for a title and a name line. Longer rows fit fewer, and the preview shows where the page break falls before you print.
