What this worksheet is for

Customary units are harder than metric for one reason: the steps are not powers of ten and there is no pattern to fall back on. Twelve inches to a foot, three feet to a yard, sixteen ounces to a pound, four quarts to a gallon — each has to be known, and the practice is as much recall as arithmetic. That is exactly why the page exists: a class in the United States needs these conversions fluently, and no amount of metric practice will supply them.

Who it suits

Grade 3 to Grade 7, ages eight to thirteen, primarily American and Canadian classrooms. Inches and feet come first, usually in Grade 3; capacity and weight follow; miles and yards belong in Grade 5 and up where the numbers get large.

How to use the settings

One measure at a time, and expect the recall of the factor to be the hard part rather than the multiplication. Leaving whole-number answers on keeps the arithmetic clean — 30 inches in feet is 2.5, which is a decimal question layered on a conversion. It is worth pairing this page with the metric one occasionally, because the contrast makes the point about powers of ten better than any explanation.

What goes wrong

Using the wrong factor between the pair is the dominant error — dividing feet by twelve instead of multiplying, or converting quarts with the gallon factor. The second is applying the size check backwards, which happens more here than in metric because there is no pattern to reinforce it: converting to a smaller unit still gives a bigger number, whatever the factor happens to be.

Questions

How many ounces are in a pound?
Sixteen. The other factors on this page: twelve inches to a foot, three feet to a yard, 1,760 yards to a mile, eight fluid ounces to a cup, four cups to a quart, four quarts to a gallon.
Are these the same as British units?
Length and weight, yes. Capacity, no — a US gallon is smaller than an imperial one, and a US fluid ounce differs from the imperial one. This page uses US customary measures.
Why do the numbers stay small?
Because the point is the factor, not the multiplication. Converting 7 yards to feet tests whether a pupil knows the three; converting 738 yards tests whether they can multiply.
