What this worksheet is for

The multiplication grid does two jobs and this page prints both. Complete, it is the chart that goes on the classroom wall or inside the front cover of an exercise book. With gaps, it is the exercise that finds out which facts are actually known — and because the gaps are drawn fresh from the seed each time, the same pupil can do the same chart on Monday and Friday without recognising the pattern. Choose which tables appear, so a class working on sixes, sevens and eights gets a grid of exactly those rows rather than a full square where most of the work is already easy.

Who it suits

Grade 2 to Grade 5, ages seven to eleven. The full twelve by twelve grid is the standard reference chart. A three-row grid with half the cells blank is a five-minute check for a class in the middle of learning a particular table.

How to use the settings

Pick the sheet first: a complete chart to display, or a chart with gaps to work on. For the gapped version, list only the tables you are teaching — the field takes a comma separated list, so 6,7,8 gives a three-row grid. The share of blank cells sets the difficulty: a quarter blank is a warm-up, everything blank is a test with only the headings given. The highest multiplier decides how wide the grid runs; ten is the usual limit in the UK and twelve in the US.

What goes wrong

When a gapped chart is filled in wrongly, the errors cluster rather than scatter: a pupil who is guessing gets whole rows wrong, and a pupil who is counting up in ones gets the far right of a row wrong while the left is perfect. Both patterns are visible at a glance on a grid and invisible on a list of problems, which is the argument for using this sheet rather than a drill page.

Questions

How do I print only certain tables?
Type them into the tables field separated by commas — 3,4,8 prints a grid with just those three rows. The multipliers along the top stay complete so the pattern is still visible.
Can I print a blank grid with no answers at all?
Set the share of blank cells to 100. The row and column headings still print, which is what makes it answerable; everything inside is empty.
Does the chart go up to 10 or to 12?
Whichever you set. Twelve is standard in the United States and in older British teaching; ten is the usual limit in the current English curriculum. The highest multiplier field covers both, up to 20.
Where is the timed practice page?
On the multiplication timed test page. It uses the same tables but prints them as a drill with a box for the time, which is a different exercise from filling in a grid.
