What this worksheet is for

Rounding is the first piece of arithmetic where the rule matters more than the calculation, and where the interesting cases are deliberately rare in the wild: a page of random numbers hardly ever lands on a halfway value, so pupils finish it without ever meeting the part of the rule they will get wrong. About one question in five here is a halfway case on purpose — a number ending in 5 when rounding to tens, 50 to hundreds, 500 to thousands — so the convention gets practised rather than avoided.

Who it suits

Grade 2 to Grade 5, ages seven to eleven. Rounding two and three digit numbers to the nearest ten is Grade 2 and 3 work; the nearest hundred and thousand with four to six digit numbers belongs in Grade 4 and 5, usually just before estimation is taught.

How to use the settings

Match the place to the length of the number: rounding a three-digit number to the nearest thousand is a legitimate question but a strange one to drill, so the generator leaves out places larger than the numbers on the page. Mixed puts the target place inside each question, which forces pupils to read rather than fall into a rhythm — a good end-of-unit sheet and a poor first lesson.

What goes wrong

The most common error is rounding the wrong digit: to round to the nearest hundred a pupil looks at the hundreds digit instead of the tens digit next to it. The second is rounding twice, so 3,462 becomes 3,470 and then 3,500. Halfway cases produce the third: some pupils round 3,450 down because 5 feels like the middle rather than the trigger to round up.

Questions

Which way do halfway numbers go?
Up. This page uses the convention taught in school — a 5 in the deciding place rounds the number away from zero, so 3,450 to the nearest hundred is 3,500. Banker’s rounding, which rounds to the even number, is a statistics convention and is not what a primary class is taught.
Why do some questions look so easy?
Numbers that are already round appear as they would in real work, and getting them right means recognising there is nothing to do. A pupil who changes them anyway has not understood the rule.
Can one page mix different rounding places?
Yes — choose Mixed and each question names its own place. It is noticeably harder, because the pupil cannot settle into one habit for the whole sheet.
