Dot grid paper

Printable dot grid at the spacing bullet journals use, or any other: dots rather than lines, so the page guides your writing without boxing it in or showing up around a sketch.

What this worksheet is for

A dot grid does the job of squared paper while staying out of the way. Lines fence writing in and show through a drawing; dots mark the same positions and disappear once something is written over them, which is why notebooks aimed at planning and sketching moved to them. Five millimetres is what the best-known bullet journals use, and it is the spacing most people are looking for when they search for this page.

Who it suits

Anyone from upper primary upwards. Common uses are journalling and planning layouts, sketching and lettering practice, wireframes and diagrams, and maths where a grid helps but ruled squares would be visually noisy.

How to use the settings

Set the spacing to match the notebook you are supplementing — 5 mm is standard, and anything below 3 mm starts to look like a texture rather than a guide. The weight setting matters more here than on ruled paper: hairline dots are almost invisible under pencil, which is ideal for finished drawings and frustrating for planning a layout. Medium is a sensible default.

What goes wrong

Printing at anything other than full size changes the spacing, and dot grids are used precisely because people count the dots — so a page shrunk to fit is worse than useless. If the dots come out as ovals rather than circles, the printer is scaling the two axes differently, which usually means a fit-to-page setting is switched on.

Questions

What spacing do bullet journals use?
Five millimetres is the common standard in the best-known notebooks. Some use 4 mm, which fits more lines on a page and suits small handwriting.
Why does the dot size change with the line weight?
Because a dot is a very short line as far as the printer is concerned. Hairline gives the faintest possible mark, medium gives a dot that stays visible under a pencil line drawn across it.
Can I print this on both sides?
Yes, and it lines up as long as your printer duplexes accurately. If the reverse side is offset, the fault is the printer rather than the page — the grid starts at the same margin on every sheet.
