What this worksheet is for
Squared paper is the sheet people run out of at the worst moment, and the printable versions floating around are usually scans: grey, slightly skewed, with lines that thicken when the page is scaled. This one is drawn to the millimetre you choose and printed at that size, because the geometry is generated rather than photographed. Five millimetres is the European school standard, a quarter inch is the American one, and one centimetre suits younger children who need room to write inside a square.
Who it suits
Grade 3 upwards and well beyond school: maths classes plotting coordinates, science lessons drawing graphs, and anyone sketching a floor plan or a knitting chart. Younger children generally want the larger squares, from 8 mm up.
How to use the settings
Set the square size first — it is the only decision that matters. Then choose the line weight: hairline uses the least ink and stays out of the way of pencil work, medium is easier to see for younger children or for anyone drawing over the grid in ink. Check the paper size before printing, because a sheet laid out for Letter and printed on A4 loses a column of squares off the right edge, which defeats the point of choosing an exact grid.
What goes wrong
The one thing that ruins printed graph paper is the printer scaling it. Browsers offer to shrink a page to fit the printable area, and a grid at 96 per cent is no longer a grid at the size you asked for — set scaling to 100 per cent, or none, before printing anything you intend to measure on.
Questions
- What size squares does school graph paper use?
- In the UK and most of Europe, 5 mm, with 1 cm for younger classes. In the United States a quarter inch — about 6.35 mm — is the usual ruling, and a fifth of an inch appears on engineering pads. All three are available here by typing the size in millimetres.
- Will the squares be exactly the size I set?
- Yes, provided your printer is not scaling the page. The grid is drawn in real units rather than pixels, so a 5 mm square measures 5 mm on the paper at 100 per cent scale.
- Can I get a heavier line every fifth square?
- Not yet — every line is currently the same weight. Emphasised major lines are worth adding and are the obvious next step for this page.
