What this worksheet is for

Isometric paper is ruled with three sets of lines at sixty degrees to each other, which is what lets a cube be drawn with every edge the same length and no vanishing point. It is the paper technical drawing classes hand out, the one used for drawing solids in maths, and the one people making models or plans reach for when a perspective sketch would distort the measurements they care about.

Who it suits

Grade 5 upwards, and heavily used outside school: design and technology, engineering drawing, tabletop map making, and anyone sketching furniture or a room where the dimensions have to stay comparable.

How to use the settings

Spacing here means the distance between neighbouring points of the triangular lattice, so a cube drawn across four steps has edges four times that number. Five millimetres suits most drawing; go larger for a quick sketch and smaller when a whole assembly has to fit on a page. Hairline is usually right, because isometric grids have three times as many lines as a square grid and get visually heavy fast.

What goes wrong

The commonest drawing error is treating one of the three directions as vertical when it is not — in a true isometric drawing only one set of lines is vertical, and the other two run at thirty degrees to the horizontal. Printing scaled down is the other trap: the angles survive, but the spacing no longer matches whatever you measured.

Questions

What is the difference between isometric and perspective drawing?
In an isometric drawing, parallel edges stay parallel and equal lengths stay equal, so measurements can be read off the drawing. In perspective, parallel lines converge and distant objects shrink, which looks more natural but cannot be measured.
Do you have isometric dot paper?
Not as a separate page yet. The dot version of this lattice is the obvious companion and is on the list; the square dot grid is available now.
What angle are the lines at?
Thirty degrees above and below the horizontal, plus a vertical set — which puts sixty degrees between each pair, and makes every small triangle equilateral.
