What this worksheet is for

A page of nothing but addition teaches a pupil to stop reading the sign. That is the reason mixed practice exists, and the reason it belongs on its own sheet rather than as an afterthought: the skill being drilled is choosing the operation, not performing it. The shares let you decide the balance — equal parts of all four, or a review page that is mostly division with a few of everything else to keep attention up. Set a share to zero and that operation is left out entirely.

Who it suits

Grade 2 to Grade 5, ages seven to eleven. Two operations mixed suits the end of Grade 2; all four belong once division has been taught, usually Grade 4. It is the natural end-of-unit review sheet at any of those levels.

How to use the settings

Set the number range for the addition and subtraction problems first. Multiplication and division stay inside the times tables whatever the range says, because a mixed page with four-digit multiplication on it is not a review, it is an obstacle. Then set the four shares: equal numbers give an even mix, and raising one above the others weights the page towards whatever the class has just been taught. In a row fits more problems and is the usual choice here, since mixed practice is normally mental.

What goes wrong

On a mixed page the errors that matter are not arithmetic slips but sign blindness: a subtraction answered as an addition, a division answered as a subtraction. Those are worth circling as a group when marking, because the fix is a reading habit rather than more practice at the operation itself. Pupils who work down a column at speed make far more of them than pupils who work across.

Questions

How do I leave one operation out?
Set its share to zero. If every share is zero the page falls back to addition and subtraction rather than printing blank.
Why do the multiplication problems stay small when I raise the range?
Because the range applies to addition and subtraction. Multiplication and division on a mixed page stay inside the times tables, so the sheet stays a review rather than turning into long multiplication with a few sums attached. Use the multiplication or division pages for the bigger written methods.
Do the divisions come out whole?
Yes. Mixed practice is about reading the sign, so remainders would add a second new idea to the same page. The division worksheet has a setting for them.
Can I print several different versions at once?
Raise Versions and each copy is drawn from its own seed, lettered on the page, with all the keys collected at the end of the same document.
