What this worksheet is for

Rounding a decimal is the same rule as rounding a whole number, applied one place further right, and it fails for the same reason: pupils look at the wrong digit. What makes decimals harder is that the answer often has fewer digits than the question, so a correct answer looks unfinished — 3.47 rounded to one place is 3.5, and pupils who have been taught to copy the shape of the question write 3.50 or get uneasy. One question in five here is a halfway case, because random decimals almost never land on one and that is exactly the case the rule exists for.

Who it suits

Grade 4 to Grade 7, ages nine to thirteen. Rounding to the nearest whole number comes first, then to a tenth, then to a hundredth — usually alongside money, where rounding to two places has an obvious purpose.

How to use the settings

Match the target place to the class and leave the whole part small at first; the size of the number in front of the point has nothing to do with the skill. Use this page immediately before any lesson on estimating, because rounding is the mechanism estimation runs on and a class that is shaky here will not follow the next step.

What goes wrong

Looking at the last digit rather than the one after the target place is the dominant error: rounding 3.418 to one place by looking at the 8. The second is rounding twice — 3.418 becomes 3.42 becomes 3.4 — which happens to give the right answer here and the wrong one often enough to matter. The third is writing trailing zeros to match the question, which is not wrong mathematically but shows the pupil is copying a shape.

Questions

Which digit decides?
The one immediately after the place you are rounding to, and only that one. Digits further right do not vote, which is why 3.4499 rounds to 3.4 and not to 3.5.
Which way do halfway cases go?
Up, away from zero — the convention taught in school. 3.45 to one place is 3.5.
Should the answer keep the same number of decimal places?
No. Rounding to one place gives a number with one decimal place, so 3.50 would be written 3.5. The key follows that, which is worth pointing out when marking.
