What this worksheet is for

Subtraction is where a generated worksheet most often goes wrong. Draw two numbers at random and roughly half the problems come out negative, which is meaningless to a class that has not met negative numbers yet — so this generator orders the pair for you unless you say otherwise. The other half of the problem is borrowing: a page that happens to contain none is a much easier page than a page full of it, and that difference is too important to leave to the draw. Both are settings you control, the preview redraws as you change them, and the answer key is generated from the same numbers rather than stored alongside them.

Who it suits

Grade 1 to Grade 4, ages six to ten. Differences within 10 and 20 are first and second year work; the range to 100 with borrowing is the classic Grade 2 to 3 exercise; the range to 1000 and negative answers belong at the end of Grade 4 or the start of middle school.

How to use the settings

Choose the range first, then decide what borrowing should do. Never gives a clean page for the lesson where the written method is introduced; Always gives a page that practises the hard step and nothing else; Mixed is closest to a test. Leave negative answers off until the class has met them — with the setting off, the larger number is always on top, which is what pupils expect at this stage. Column form shows the written method with the numbers stacked; in a row is for mental practice. Print two versions if you want neighbouring desks to have different numbers.

What goes wrong

The classic error is subtracting the smaller digit from the larger one in each column regardless of which is on top, so 43 − 27 comes out as 24. It is invisible on a page with no borrowing, which is exactly why the Always setting is worth using once a week. The second error is forgetting to reduce the digit that was borrowed from, which shows up as an answer that is ten too large.

Questions

What is borrowing?
Borrowing — or regrouping — is what happens when the digit on top is smaller than the digit below it, so a ten is taken from the next column. It is the step that makes written subtraction harder than written addition, and the setting lets you decide whether the page contains it.
Why are the answers never negative by default?
Because a class that has not been taught negative numbers cannot answer 7 − 12, and a worksheet full of problems like that teaches nothing. With the setting off the generator puts the larger number first. Turn it on and both orders appear, which is the right exercise once integers have been introduced.
Can I use the same sheet with two classes?
The address bar holds the seed and every setting, so the link reproduces the sheet exactly — same problems, same order, same key. Bookmark it and print it again next year.
How many problems fit on one page?
In a row, about forty at the default size on US Letter, fewer once you add working space. Column form takes more room, so twenty to thirty is realistic. The preview shows the page breaks as they will print, so you never discover a stray second page at the printer.
