What this worksheet is for

Dividing by a fraction is the step where pupils stop reasoning and start following a rule: turn the second fraction upside down and multiply. The rule works, and it is worth practising until it is automatic, but it is also worth pairing with one question a lesson that asks why — how many quarters are in three halves is a question a child can answer with a drawing, and the answer is the same six the rule produces. This page provides the drill; the drawing is your job.

Who it suits

Grade 5 to Grade 7, ages ten to thirteen. It comes after multiplication is secure, because the rule converts every division into a multiplication. Mixed numbers belong at the end of that sequence.

How to use the settings

Keep the denominators small at first — the arithmetic after inverting is a multiplication, and if the products run into three digits the fraction work disappears behind them. Once the rule is automatic, raise the limit and switch on mixed numbers, which force the conversion to improper fractions before anything else can happen.

What goes wrong

Inverting the wrong fraction is the commonest error and produces an answer that looks plausible, which is what makes it dangerous. The second is inverting and then still trying to find a common denominator. With mixed numbers, the classic fault is inverting before converting to an improper fraction, which gives nonsense — worth catching early, because pupils rarely spot it themselves.

Questions

Which fraction gets turned upside down?
The second one, the one you are dividing by. The first fraction stays exactly as it is.
Why does dividing by a fraction make the answer bigger?
Because you are asking how many of the small thing fit into the big one. Three halves divided by a quarter asks how many quarters fit into one and a half, and the answer is six.
What has to happen to mixed numbers first?
They have to become improper fractions before anything is inverted. Two and a half divided by a half is five halves divided by one half, which is five.
